Tear Trough Filler Injection

Tear Trough Filler Injection

The condition known as Tear Trough sees a hollow area emerging under the eye, running from the inner corner and extending outwards under the lower lid.

Developing a tear trough is usually an ageing-related concern. Getting older will naturally see the soft tissue of this characteristically sensitive and thin-skinned area lose volume and elasticity. This volume loss, in turn, can lead to loose skin under the eyes, causing the appearance of “eye-bags” or shadowing under the eye, otherwise known as ‘”dark circles“.

When affected by either or both of these concerns, a person can often feel tired or prematurely aged, commonly seeking treatment to eradicate feelings of self-consciousness from what can be thought of as an unflattering trait.

At Dr PJ Aesthetic Clinic, tear troughs are treated using Dermal Fillers. Small boluses of filler are applied using very fine injections into the area just above the orbital bone, repeated sufficiently to deliver the right amount of dermal filler as gently as possible. Each individual deposit of dermal filler will be massaged using the fingertips, carefully moulding it along the tear trough pathway.

An in-depth pre-treatment consultation will assess your condition and desired outcome, so our aesthetic specialists can decide upon the best treatment option for you. Each specific procedure will produce different results based upon the shape of the orbital bone, the hollow’s depth, and the individual response to the filler itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?
Tear trough fillers work by precision placed multiple puncture techniques, using extremely fine needles. The Hyaluronic acid (the body’s natural moisturiser) contain dermal filler is injected just above the orbital bone to fill effectively in the hollow areas beneath the eyes. Injected dermal filler acts as a replacement for lost collagen to effectively plump the area beneath the eye temporarily eradicating the appearance of hollows, dark circles and eye bags.
This treatment can benefit a broad range of clients in all skin type and colour. Based upon the shape of the orbital bone, the depth of the hollow and the individual response to the filler itself, a full and thorough pre-treatment consultation will determine your suitability. While we do not know of any risks to those who are breastfeeding or pregnant, we would advise you to wait until these circumstances have changed.
The orbital circle area is not especially sensitive; therefore, pain is typically very minimal. An initial but brief sting might be felt with each tiny injection. It is possible to render the procedure virtually pain free by numbing the area using a topical numbing cream* immediately prior to beginning the treatment. However, after the procedure, bruising may cause a little bit of discomfort for a few days.
Results are immediately evident and will continue to develop over the next few days.
Dermal fillers are at low risk; therefore, complications are infrequent. As there is no anticipated downtime; therefore, you can easily incorporate your dermal filler appointments into your daily activities. Right after treatment, there is the possibility of bruising, slight redness, minor swelling, minimal pain and an itching sensation in the treated site. They are often relatively insignificant and usually resolve within a few days. Bruising can be covered using a cover-stick or foundation. Applying a dose of topical Arnica to the affected area is recommended if you want to help a bruise heal more rapidly. Topical Arnica is usually best for skin bruises. However, homoeopathic Arnica tablets can also be helpful. Specific rare side effects exist that will be discussed thorough pre-treatment consultation.
As with almost all Hyaluronic Acid injections, we anticipate results to last between 3-12 months, although it has been our experience that it may last considerably longer. After initial treatment, most patients choose to return for a follow-up treatment approximately every 6-12 months. However, you can receive this procedure as frequently as you like, depending on the degree of improvement desired. A top-up treatment within 2-4 weeks of the initial injection may be required to achieve optimal results. If so, upon reaching that plateau, the effects can be much longer-lasting, and a smaller amount of the Hyaluronic Acid will be needed.
We use only the best-known FDA-approved products such as Restylane (Medicis®), Juvederm (Allergan®) and Belotero (Merz®).

Although treatment times may vary, the treatment typically requires around 30-45 minutes, and to the delight of patients, the results are instantaneous.

Anaesthetic: Anaesthetic cream can be applied approximately 20-30 minutes before treatment.

You are advised not to expose the treated area to intensely high temperatures as found in solariums and during sunbathing nor to the extreme cold. There is also a risk that needle punctures of any type might contribute to another eruption if you have historically suffered from facial cold sores. As a result, starting a course of Zovirax or Aciclovir cream just before the day of your procedure can reduce the chances of this reoccurring.
