Dark Circles Treatment
Dark circles under the eyes and hollows can develop in the tear trough area, the area between the cheek and lower eyelid, which can happen as a part of the ageing process when dark circles are getting apparent.
The dark circle may also be due to genetics or ethnicity, as dark circles under the eyes more commonly affect people with darker skin tones.
Age is the contributing factor, dark circles and hollows under the eyes develop due to lost volume and thinning skin, due to the reduction of collagen and elastin. The skin in this area is already quite delicate and coupled with further thinning, and a weakened structure can be prone to the blood vessels becoming more visible, giving the skin in this area a darker appearance.
Overexposure to the sun, dehydration, stress, and fatigue can exacerbate the conditions and be accompanied by puffiness in the lower lids. The affected person can often feel like they have adopted a tired appearance that makes them look older than they are, leading to lost confidence and lowered self-esteem.
At Dr PJ Aesthetic Clinic, some of the treatments available to help reduce Dark Circles’ appearance are Dermal Fillers (Tear Trough) Injection, 3D Comprehensive Brightening HydrO2 Facial, Radiofrequency and Eye Facial.

Frequently Asked Questions
There are three categories or types of dark under-eye circles.
- Discolouration from the darkening of the pigmentation
- Discolouration from prominent vasculature
- Discolouration from periorbital structural changes
Darker circles are the result of oxygenated blood pools found beneath the under-eye skin. This blood pool can cause hyperpigmentation. Genetic, or race, seasonal allergies, and nasal congestion are amongst the most common cause of dark under-eye circles. Chronic eye-rubbing, excessive sun exposure, and age are other well-documented causes of this problem. However, As previously stated, allergies are another major cause. Even minor nasal congestion can cause dilation of the blood vessels that drain from the area around the eyes and into the nose. When this occurs, these blood vessels darken. Other contributing causes of dark circles are diseases, infections, vitamin deficiencies, mental disorders, weight gain and loss, diet, and unhealthy lifestyle.
It has been observed that dark circles under the eyes are most prevalent among Asian and African heritage. Undeniably, this condition is also the result of ageing; therefore, it is more often observed in older people. Those who have a genetic trait of fragile lower eyelid skin can also present with dark circles, due to their veins. Those having an Iron deficiency can also suffer as this condition can prevent the blood from carrying sufficient oxygen to eye tissues. Sleeping disorders such as insomnia can be a cause. Other reasons for dark circles to manifest are quite diverse: pregnancy, being overweight, Eczema or skin pigmentation abnormalities, depression, substance abuse/ drug addiction, low immunity, or illnesses. Deficiencies in Vitamin B12, E, K, and D can also lead to dark circles. This condition is even more prevalent in individuals with high cheekbones since the eyelid cheek junction elongates over time. The appearance of the tear trough becomes more prominent.
We advise that clients reduce sun exposure and always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection. These products should be applied to the lash line, and additionally, wear sunglasses whenever possible.
- Sleep: At least 7-9 hours of sleep is recommended: the skin takes on a paler (or greyer in the case of dark-skinned individuals) due to lack of sleep. This change naturally draws attention to the darker contrast beneath the eyes. It has been noted that in addition to dark circles, there might also be puffiness. This puffiness can be addressed if you can sleep on your back rather than the side and always elevate the head using a pillow.
- Nutrition: Both sufficient water and antioxidants are recommended. We advise abstaining from salt and moderation of alcohol in your diet. This restriction is because both can lead to water retention and increase swelling while reducing circulation. In the morning after indulging, you notice puffiness, and you can use a chilled teaspoon, placing it on the eyelids for about ten minutes. In addition to helping to reduce puffiness, it can cause constriction of the blood vessels.
- Smoking: Cessation of smoking will significantly improve the quality of your skin and improve your overall health.
- Make-up: Use of slightly peachy or yellow concealer helps to counteract shadows caused brown pigmentation.
- Check for allergies and sinus related issues. These are such common occurrences; one can treat them by using over the counter antihistamines as allergies can dilate the blood vessels, making the eyes puffy and darker.
- It has often been found that volume loss in the periorbital area results in dark circles and is not merely a skin colour change. The orbital bone becomes more prominent, creating a hollow tear trough as one age. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm can be used to treat tear troughs. These are injected into the area to re-plump and push the skin up and away from the blood vessels. Care is always taken to minimise the risk of the tinsel effect, or a blue tinge. These side effects are sometimes observed when these fillers are used in the under-eye skin.
- Mesotherapy injections used on their own or along with the use of dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid has been used to diminish the appearance of dark circles successfully.
- Radiofrequency and 810 nm Diode laser treatments can also help boost collagen production and diminish dark circles’ appearance while tightening the skin around the eyes. These treatments would typically be a course of six treatments.
- Q-switch Laser can be used to destroy pigmented cells and to even out skin tone. These changes are done with a beam of light (laser) energy.
