Pigmentation
The colour of your skin is determined by pigmentation and the level of production of a pigment called Melanin.
Producing too much Melanin (Hyperpigmentation) causes your skin to darken. Whereas skin produces too little Melanin (Hypopigmentation) causes it to be lighter. Melanin is also responsible for protecting the skin from absorbing harmful UV rays from the sun.
Another visible form of pigmentation is age spots. These often appear as small localised patches, brown to black and flat in texture. Also, sun-exposure, injury to the skin/inflammation, hormonal changes or a reaction to medication are common causes for the disruption of Melanin’s steady production resulting in pigmentation irregularities. A pigmentation disorder can affect anyone at any age, anywhere on the body.
The Hyperpigmentation usually caused by overexposure to the sun or ageing. Darker patches are more likely to develop when the skin is mainly left uncovered, such as the face, arms, hands and shoulders. Suppose an area of pigmentation has developed in a spot on the body that is particularly visible to others.
In that case, a person can often feel drawn to the uneven patch, leading to feelings of self-consciousness and a misperception of age.
A full assessment conducted in a pre-treatment consultation will address the condition’s extent and outline the best treatment to ensure you achieve the right outcome for your concern.
