Sun Damage

The skin can be affected by sun damage in a variety of ways.

In our younger years, most of us have smooth, even, flawless skin. But as time goes by we are exposed to the sun’s UV rays which can be harmful to the skin, causing changes to its texture and appearance. Many people often look to have tanned skin, but it indicates damage when the skin changes colour. It can lead to the development of further complications or concerns.

Some of the effects of sun damage to the skin include:

  • Lines and wrinkles: Overexposure to the sun’s rays can help to speed up the ageing process, as the skin becomes dehydrated and further damage to the production of collagen and elastin, which keeps the skin full and supple.
  • Dry skin: As UV rays cause the skin to become dehydrated, the skin can become rough, itchy, flaky and scaly in appearance.
  • Age spots: UV rays as part of the ageing process can cause hyperpigmentation and age spots.
  • Atypical moles: Although these are common, exposure to the sun can lead to changes in shape and colour, which may require closer monitoring.
  • Actinic Keratosis: This presents as scaly, rough patches of skin or raised bumps on the face, scalp, ears, arms, neck and hands. They can differ in colour, can sometimes itch and may need to be monitored.
  • Actinic Cheilitis: A form of Actinic Keratosis that develops on the lips. Your lips will be dry and split most of the time and may also need to be monitored.
  • Rosacea: Most prevalent in women over the age of 30, the sun’s rays can harm the blood vessels under the skin, causing redness that can come and go, changing in severity.

At Dr PJ Aesthetic Clinic, available treatments can improve the skin’s tone and texture, encouraging cell regrowth and restoring healthy properties to the skin to give a refreshed new look.
