Age Spots Treatment

Age spots are a common skin complaint, usually presenting themselves as brown or black patches of skin.

Also known as ‘sunspots’ or ‘liver spots’, this hyperpigmentation area is often small, flat, and circular. Age spots usually appear on people in their 40s as their name suggests, it can be a typical effect of ageing.

The skin is given its colour from a pigment called Melanin, occurring naturally in the upper layer develop skin. An Age Spot can develop due to an overproduction of this pigment. Melanin also has another job to do, protecting our skin from harmful UV rays emanating from the sun and responsible for causing the skin to tan.

Exposure to the sun, as well as the overuse of tanning lamps and tanning beds, can stimulate the production of Melanin. When exposed to large or lengthy amounts of UV rays, Melanin can be produced excessively, causing the development of Age Spots.

As this concern can be related to sun exposure, Age Spots most commonly appear in places on the body that are primarily left uncovered, such as arms, hands, face, neck, and shoulders.

Affecting anyone of any age, sex, or race, Age Spots, or ‘Pigment Spots’ are not usually harmful. However, they can often cause the affected person to feel embarrassed by these if they are very apparent, leading to a lack of self-confidence.

Some simple non-invasive treatments can help reduce the visibility of Age Spots and restore the patient’s confidence and help them feel more confident in their appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does laser work on age spots?
Without question, lasers are useful in the treatment of age spots. Patients have embraced this method due to the development of short-pulsed, pigment-specific lasers. They selectively destroy the pigment within the solar lentigo with a very low risk of adverse effects, and high patient acceptance, leading to significant clinical improvement. Carbon Peel (Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, 532 nm wavelength) and Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments have both met with great success. Carbon Peel (Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, 532 nm wavelength) can be used to remove brown age spots (solar lentigines), freckles, naevus of Ota, naevus of Ito, Mongolian spots, Hori naevus, and café-au-lait-macules.
TCA 33% of solutions are less effective than Carbon Peel (Q-Switch Laser) in treating age spots of the hands’ back, particularly in lighter-complexioned individuals. Conversely, darker-complexioned people, it is found that TCA 33% may be preferred, even though post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation remains a risk for both modalities.
The currently commercially available skin-lightening products target natural melanin production, many as competitive tyrosinase inhibitors, a copper-containing enzyme.
