Botox for Masseter Muscle

Botox for Masseter Muscle

Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX) can be injected into the masseter muscle as an effective way to recontour the lower part of the face.

This procedure aims to smooth the appearance of a square-shaped jawline to create a round or oval appearance, that may be more aesthetically pleasing.

The masseter muscle, located at the sides of the jaw controls the mouth’s opening and closing. This muscle can be enlarged (Masseter muscle hypertrophy) in some people and give the lower face a square shape. This condition can affect either one or both sides of the face (unilateral or bilateral) and cause an asymmetric look. Although both males and females can be affected, it is common among people of Asian descent.

It is no longer the case that surgery is the only way to recontour the lower face or jawline. Botulinum Toxin – type A (BOTOX) is fast becoming popular for treating various medical and aesthetic conditions. Already a successful treatment for wrinkles, teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and chronic headaches/migraines, this injectable treatment is also effective in reshaping the jawline. For a masseter muscle enlarged, the toxin works to block acetylcholine release – the substance responsible for the muscle’s overgrowth. This helps the muscle decrease in size, resulting in a slimmer look to the jawline and an appearance that may be more desirable for the patient.

A personalized approach is taken when recommending the treatment, and results may vary from person to person.
