Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Hair Removal

Tri-Wave MD Dermalux LED

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a procedure used to remove unwanted hair successfully.

As a type of light therapy, IPL is a treatment used for hair removal and various dermatological procedures, including lines, wrinkles, and spots.

Although everyone has hair on their body, it is not everyone’s perception that it is attractive. Hair becomes unwanted if it appears thicker and more noticeable in an area that is not considered an appropriate place to grow. People will often seek treatment if they become embarrassed and self-conscious by unwelcome hair growth.

While this treatment is not technically a laser procedure, it uses the same concept of photothermolysis, making IPL an effective alternative. Intense pulses of light can be delivered into the second layer (dermis) of the skin, without damaging the surface (epidermis), by moving the handset over the area of choice. The hair follicle is then destroyed, preventing it from regrowing.

IPL differs from traditional laser treatments as it concentrates on many different wavelengths, instead of just one, scattering the energy over a larger area. IPL is suited for all shades of hair from the fairest to the darkest except for the non-pigmented hair. It is also suitable for all hair types; however, it works better on thin, vellus hair. It works best on the skin that is more even in texture, being less effective when the skin is affected by thick raised scars.

The benefits of having this treatment can include the following:

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the risks of IPL hair removal?
There may be some redness and swelling after the treatment but this usually only lasts one or two days. Sometimes there can be an increase or loss of pigmentation (dis-colouration) in the skin. Sometimes, the pigment cells (melanocytes) can get slightly damaged, leaving paler or darker skin patches. However, there have been very few cases when this happened, and it too will right itself. IPL has very rarely caused scarring, and It may not be very efficient on lighter hair colours such as white, blonde and red.
A minimum course of 10-12 sessions is the norm. Your aesthetic practitioner will expertly assess the number of treatments you will require during your consultation.
Within days you will notice that the number of hairs growing in a treated area has been diminished following each treatment.
All hair removal methods can create a risk of scarring; this potential reaction is included in the consent forms you will need to sign before laser treatment can be performed. You can be assured that the risk of scarring from this method is highly unlikely. The likelihood of scarring involves many factors which include but is not limited to the following: the technician’s skill, experience, training and knowledge; your body’s natural ability to heal; the amount of pigmentation (melanin) in the skin and darker-skinned individuals possessing a higher risk.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a versatile treatment that is effective for various areas on both the body and the face. Your expert therapist will be able to put together a bespoke treatment plan after a full assessment of your conditions at the pre-treatment consultation.
